"Diegueño" was the nickname given by the Spanish for the indigenous Kumeyaay living along the San Diego river close to Mission San Diego de Alcalá. The Kumeyaay, also known as Tipai-Ipai, are a tribe of indigenous Americans who occupied what is now known as San Diego and northern Baja California.
